"Stand down with dignity and Integrity and no longer fight, as we have lost this battle through the ballot box" Grand Chief Sir M T Somare to his children By Arthur Somare I fought that good fight along side Patrick Pruaitch in the battle grounds of the Supreme Court in 2011 and the 2012 National General Election in the hope that the good people of PNG would have empathised with us in the one all important and honourable cause to preserve our Constitutional Democracy and all that that entails. Many more of my colleagues who took this stance suffered the same fate as me! Patrick was one of a very few who survived the massacre carrying the battle scars and the memories of that fateful day and still today cares for the Grand OldMan who is in his retirement with love and affection. It was Grand Chief who said to his sons and daughters to stand-down with dignity and integrity and fight no longer as we have lost this fight through the ballot box. He chose peace and harmony instead of emotions and foolish pride. With Grand Chief’s council Patrick conceded and lowered the NA banner to secure and ensure peaceful transition in elected government which was the desire of the OldMan. I say again that the Grand Chief elected to have peace and harmony and allowed us to move on. So let no man or woman tell me otherwise because I was there! I can say this, very few then did anything about this and that was regrettable and truely sad for me indeed - so I had elected to just move on! There are very many who said nothing then and did nothing, and now wish to cease this opportunistic moment to support their own emotionally charged political agenda in a time of failing economic circumstances. The truth is that I have moved on after carrying this burden for many many years and still suffer the political scars and indignation today and the curse of men in many years gone past. As others had tried to silence my sibling yesterday with threats and intimidation I would also ask kindly that no-one again use my family’s misfortunes to propagate and foster their own political agenda. I am no saint but my duty to my father has cost me and my family dearly! We have and will forever be the most hurt and no one need ever to remind me! On the contrary many more Papua New Guinean suffer from the humiliation of abject poverty and I wish to serve them today in my private and personal capacity - in my own little ways, where politicians like myself in the past have failed them and continue to fail them today! The OldMan did the honourable think in 2012 after the formation of Government and put the political impasse behind him and moved on never to repeat or utter the torment of the impasse which is his together with his immediate families personal suffering and sacrifice! He had chosen to do so so others can move beyond this sad moment in our history. So please just move on and get focused on our immediate needs for tomorrow - as the OldMan has already progressed far beyond this regrettable moment in PNG’s history.
