Wisdom supersedes knowledge as the philosophers say and politics in PNG is fluid. Combine these two elements and what do you have, you guessed it correct: Anything can happen in PNG because it is the Land of the Unexpected. We admire the words of wisdom from Sir Julius Chan; one of our founding fathers and ‘the last man standing’ in politics in PNG. He was cool and of composure during the press conference when he spoke to the media last week regarding the latest changes in government due to the defection of government MPs to Opposition benches. Many of our leaders today lack this rare and special attribute only possessed by a few politicians predetermined by Almighty Adonai. As clearly depicted by the good book; for many are called but few are chosen. This immortal adage is deeply rooted in clear commonsense and rational thinking which should prevail and guide the dictates and conscience of our parliamentarians as they begin their horse-trading during these few remaining weeks leading up to the climax on December 1St when PNG government sits for the close of business. For the man on the street perspective, here are some brief matrixes that should guide the facts from fiction when incumbent prime ministers are nominated in the forthcoming VONC or shall we say should it ever happen: The Opposition has its prime ministerial candidates or nominees ready and from observation, potential candidates are:
From careful assessment and scrutiny of the above mentioned parliamentarians, they are indeed very experienced prime ministerial candidates and all of them have contributed immensely to the affairs of our great nation. We cannot draw a blanket conclusion and rule them out but select them on the basis of merit and experience because experience is the best teacher.
If we go by the criterion list, there are many factors that underpins the selection process and would be exhaustive but obviously the common denominators are: knowledge ‘save’, money, and experience. These are three chief characteristics that determines candidates in this day and age. They are all valuable indicators. However, rule out ‘save’ or knowledge because it is proven in PNG that those with ‘save’ or knowledge as defined by Western philosophy have been careless, misguided and have recklessly misused opportunities to steer this country to prosperity. Of course, they can use the lame excuse of ‘Rome was not built over night’ but to be realistic in defining development; one has to have clear and achievable strategic plans all laid out and in visionary fashion leaving no room for ad hoc inconsistencies and 11th hour changes. Coupled with that and the willingness to accept sound advice, counsel and guidance from elders is paramount. Although some of their advice would not be acceptable that does not mean that we close our ears to them but listen, adjust, modify and integrate these advice and counsel with today’s modern ‘knowledge’ and blend them together for a home grown development plan. Therefore, the layman’s choice for the PNG Government CEO is based on two simple selection criterion:
Highlands: Pais Wingti, Peter O’Neill, James Marape Mamose: Sir Michael Thomas Somare Southern: Sir Mekere Morauta, Bill Skate NGI: Sir Julius Chan, Sir Rabbie Namaliu This simple logic clearly shows that the occupation of PM post since independence has been unfairly distributed over time hence concentration of this function has been biased. Note: we rule out the Highlands candidate because ‘their time is up’ as emphasized by former PM Peter O’Neill at the press conference.
Morobe – Wafi/Golpu Mine, Cocoa & Copra, Forestry, Fishery Sepik – Freida Copper Mine, Sepik Economic Zone Agroindustry Project, Forestry NGI – Lihir Gold Mine, Cocoa & Copra, Forestry, Fishery Southern – LNG Gas, Fishery, Forestry Based on this premise and after careful evaluation of the PM choice and the potential criterion used for benchmarking given above, it is obviously clear that the balance of power must now shift to the Mamose Region. This region has enjoyed the privilege of the PM post only once and has never had any PM apart from Grand Chief Sir MTSomare. Give them this opportunity to handle the country’s top CEO position based on the simple matrixes outlined above. Hence, right thinking Mamose MPs must now unite and consolidate your position and demand for the PM chair.
