By George Sikin Many say he was a turncoat when he walked into O'Neill's government. What many did not see was he was fighting a battle on multi fronts. He was emerging as a promising Prime Minister prospect; an undeniable truth his haters will choose to deny. He was being targeted. He threw the first punch in the '17 match only to fall short of the magic number. The camp he was in mustered only 46. He had to recoil. He had been exposed and if a recourse is not immediately taken thereafter he will be reduced to ashes. That is, he will still be retained by his constituency but to ever dream of leading a growing Political Party will be but a chasm of impossibility. He had to sacrifice something. Sadly, constitutional democracy bears like hallmarks to Christian teachings: You can only be on one of two sides. There is no middle ground. He had to put the Party's 'survival' before his own, hoping his people will understand. In so doing, he ended being perceived as a renegade and his move bitterly esteemed as an unpardonable sin. Time is a vice. Basil had outgrown the schemes plotted against him; the worst of which has been to split Morobe up. With his United Labour Party (ULP) he is seeing to it the resurgence of a Morobe Movement spanning beyond its 'river banks' and into the Eastern Blok with effect to potentially canvas this great nation of many tales whose provenance entails warriors and bands of loyalists who stuck side by side in a moderately Melanesian fashion, handing to us the unique legacy of our historical identity. Basil is not the renegade or 'Judas' as his enemies want people to believe. His unique leadership style portrays him to be a young national leader who BELIEVES IN HONOR. He believes in continuity. He believes in honoring legacy. He is not a traitor. His choice of Late. Hon. Thomas Pelika's son as his ULP's endorsed candidate is testimony of his belief in HONOR AND LEGACY. Few weeks ago the nation and perhaps avid followers of PNG Politics from beyond our shores witnessed Basil giving HONOR to Marape with an official handing of the PANGU FLAG to him. Basil ensured the LEGACY of PANGU lives on despite the change of captains. Few years ago, he HONORED the Founder of PANGU and political father of our nation, Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare, by sincerely apologizing for the disrespect in 2011 which saw the demise of the NA Party regime and the rise of O'Neill's PNC Party. Politics can be murky but Basil can stir it with the spoon of HONOR and the stroke of LEGACY and make the nation drink in the filtered reasons of why he is not a renegade but a true son of Morobe - KUMUL BILONG MOROBE.
