Providing effective security measures on port facilities and ensuring the safety of the country’s maritime transport system has been the primary focus of the United States Coast Guard in Papua New Guinea. The assistance is provided under the US Coast Guard’s International Port Security Program. US is determined to ensure PNG’s port facilities effectively implement the International Ship and Port Facility Security code, an essential maritime regulation for the safety and security of ships, ports, cargo, and crew members. The auditing of the I-S-P-S code is paramount to ensure those employed by ports to provide security fully comply with these maritime safety regulations. The United States Coast Guard is ensuring PNG’s international port facilities are effectively monitoring the activity of people and cargo on vessels and are able to detect the different security threats onboard vessels and in port facilities. This is provided through the dissemination of vital knowledge, skills, and expertise to practitioners of the I-S-P-S code during training and auditing programs. International Port Security Specialist Tivo Romero says these trainings are crucial in ensuring the security aspects of the ship, seafarers, ports and port workers are safe.
Speaking during the official opening of a week-long Seminar at Loloata Island resort this week, Mr Romero says this is also to ensure preventive measures are taken if a security threat is determined. The seminar will help security practitioners to detect the different security threats onboard vessels and in port and implement the measure as per the situation in accordance with the government and agencies concerned. US assistance in this sector received overwhelming support from the government through the department of Transport. Transport Secretary Roy Mumu acknowledged USCG’s o ongoing support and optimistic skills acquired throughout the seminar would be necessary to confidently carry out their roles under the ISPC code. Representatives from various port facilities around the country including PNG Ports Corporation and Water police are attending the forum this week at the Loloata Island resorts outside Port Moresby.
