In a gesture of hospitality and reverence, the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Jiwaka, Papua New Guinea, has provided Pastor Ted Wilson, the global leader of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, with a specially constructed residence during his visit. Wilson, known as the church’s general conference president, is staying in a K1.2 million house named the "White House," built by devoted church members. Pastor John Kundapen, the Jiwaka area supervisor, expressed pride in the two-bedroom, self-contained house, explaining that it was named after the country of origin of the church's leader, the United States. Wilson’s visit is part of the PNG for Christ programme, during which he will be preaching in Minj for two weeks. Kundapen shed light on the Very Important People (VIP) programme initiated in 2018 in the province. He stated that the programme aims to provide housing and support for individuals facing various challenges, including disabilities, widows, the less fortunate, and the sick. Under this initiative, 54 houses have been constructed across four districts to accommodate VIPs.
The main centre, built in Minj at a cost of about K1 million, will be officially launched by both the world conference president, Pastor Ted Wilson, and Prime Minister James Marape. Since its inception in 2018, the VIP programme has benefitted approximately 10,000 marginalized individuals. What began as a pilot programme in Jiwaka has now expanded nationwide within the Seventh-day Adventist Church, with similar initiatives being implemented in churches across the country. The ongoing PNG for Christ programme in Minj has already drawn over 7,000 attendees during the past three nights. Despite weather challenges, Pastor Wilson’s sermons have been broadcast live on platforms such as Adventist Word Radio and Hope Radio. Reflecting on the Sunday night event, Wilson shared on Facebook that despite the rain, attendees remained steadfast, with many even utilizing umbrellas while listening to his preaching. The visit of Pastor Ted Wilson not only underscores the commitment of the Seventh-day Adventist Church to its members but also highlights the spirit of hospitality and care deeply ingrained within the church's ethos.
