Re-elected Kandep Open MP, Don Polye had provided a statement of evidence to the UBS Commission of Inquiry at the APEC HAUS, Ela Beach, Downtown in Port Moresby. The Royal CoI is still continuing its task to enquire into processes and procedures followed by the PNG Government into obtaining the off-shore loan from the Union Bank of Switzerland and related transactions. The CoI is led by former Chief Justice Sir Salamo Injia. There have been several prominent leaders, both currently in parliament or former parliamentarians, who have been assisting the inquiry. Among those include the late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare, through his lawyer, just before he passed away. Kandep MP, and the former Deputy Prime Minister, Don Polye, after providing his statement of evidence, says the reason for his assistance was because he feels strongly that so many laws were broken in getting the loan. He says he wants to show that what was done was wrong, and should be avoided in future where a loan taken out by the government is not invested for the benefit of a majority of Papua New Guineans. Polye has been a key witness since the UBS CoI was set up.
He was the Minister for Finance and also Treasury Minister at the time the loan was secured in 2014, by the then-O'Neill-led government. He was subsequently sacked, and then joined the Opposition. Mr. Polye presented documents in his statement of evidence pertaining to the K3 Billion UBS loan, which he describes as being illegal, and unconstitutional, and breaking various laws in the manner it was obtained, and its use. Mr. Polye told media, that the documents he presented at the Royal COI office were on the loan itself, what the loan meant, the loan conditions, the loan financier, loan facilitator, and loan implementer. He says the UBS was the the loan financier, facilitator, and implementer, as well as the strategic advisor to the government. Mr. Polye says he also gave information about the warnings he gave to the government and the ministries and other ministers of parliament, including documents relating to his conversation with the Department of Treasury, that refer to the it not being prudent to access the UBS loan. Meantime, after today's COI hearings, former Prime Minister Sir Rabbie Namaliu and former Deputy Prime Minister Grand Chief Sir Leo Dion, are scheduled and expected to be at the hearing on Thursday June 9th. Meanwhile, for Polye, his scheduled hearings will be either on June 21 or 22. FM100 / PNGfacts Next : PNG Defence Minister Mirisim To Face Leadership Tribunal Comments are closed.
