PNG's Foreign Affairs Minister Condemns Biden's Allegations of PNG Cannibalism During WWII23/4/2024
The Foreign Affairs Minister of Papua New Guinea, Justin Tkatchenko, has strongly rebuked recent comments made by US President Joe Biden, alleging cannibalism in PNG during World War II. Minister Tkatchenko termed the remarks as unsubstantiated and unacceptable at the international level. Expressing regret over President Biden's assertion that his uncle may have been eaten by cannibals in Papua New Guinea during the war, Minister Tkatchenko emphasized the lack of evidence to support such claims. "It's rather unfortunate that President Biden's remarks are not supported by official documents held within the US military and the State Department," remarked Foreign Minister Tkatchenko, highlighting the absence of credible evidence to validate the allegations. Minister Tkatchenko underscored the recent strides in PNG-US bilateral relations and lamented that the President's remarks represent a setback in the efforts to foster stronger ties between the two nations. Clarifying the circumstances surrounding President Biden's uncle, Minister Tkatchenko cited known records indicating that he was aboard a flight from Momote to Lae over the Bismarck Sea, which tragically never reached its destination. "Papua New Guinea hopes that the White House can rectify this remark, which has the potential to harm our longstanding diplomatic relations," stated Minister Tkatchenko, urging for a correction of the unsubstantiated claims. Furthermore, Minister Tkatchenko highlighted ongoing efforts by a division of the US military dedicated to retrieving and repatriating the remains of fallen servicemen from World War II. He proposed expanding the scope of their search to include civilians, such as President Biden's uncle, in order to ascertain the truth regarding his fate. Emphasizing the significance of recent efforts to strengthen PNG-US relations, Minister Tkatchenko cautioned against uninformed remarks that could undermine the progress made and jeopardize the cordial relationship between the two countries.
