Port Moresby, April 22, 2024 - Deputy Prime Minister John Rosso extended a warm welcome to Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese upon his arrival at Jacksons Airport in Port Moresby this afternoon. Prime Minister Albanese's visit to Papua New Guinea (PNG) is in commemoration of ANZAC Week, where joint war commemorations are being held in the country. During his time in PNG, Prime Minister Albanese plans to walk the Kokoda Track, a historic route famously utilized by Australian soldiers during World War II, from Kokoda to Deniki Village. Additionally, he is scheduled to participate in the Dawn Service in Isurava. ANZAC Day, observed on April 25th, holds significant importance in Australia as it marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. These commemorations extend to honoring the memory of all servicemen and women who have served in wars. This visit marks Prime Minister Albanese's second trip to PNG. In January 2023, during his previous visit, he paid respects to the family home of the Late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare in Wewak. Acknowledging the historic ties between the Australian Labour Party (ALP) and Pangu Pati, both pre and post-independence, Prime Minister Albanese emphasized the pivotal role played by the Late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare in facilitating a peaceful transition from self-government to full independence for Papua New Guinea. Prime Minister Albanese's presence in PNG underscores the strong alliance, close proximity, and supportive relationship between the two countries, especially during times when derogatory remarks were made by certain international figures.
