In a recent parliamentary session, the Minister for Higher Education and Sports in Papua New Guinea, Hon. Don Polye, expressed the government's dedication to finding effective solutions to support families dealing with the financial challenges of tertiary education. During the session, Minister Polye responded to impromptu questions from Manus Governor Hon. Charlie Benjamin, who inquired about the 75 percent tuition fees expected from parents of students residing in rural areas. The focus was on how the Department of Higher Education plans to assist students facing financial constraints. Governor Benjamin highlighted the current predicament where students, primarily from rural areas with limited resources, are registering at colleges and universities. Many of these students face the daunting task of paying school fees ranging from K15,000 to K20,000.
The parliamentary inquiry aimed to shed light on the government's initiatives to alleviate the financial burden on parents whose children are enrolled in tertiary institutions, particularly the requirement to pay 75 percent of tuition fees for registration. Minister Polye acknowledged the valid concerns raised by both parents and students on this matter. "I've received a lot of queries and concerns regarding this issue from parents and students," he stated. In response, Minister Polye assured the parliament that steps were being taken to address the situation. He mentioned, "I've requested the Department of Higher Education to provide me with a brief on how the government can intervene and assist with this." Emphasizing the urgency of the matter, Minister Polye stressed, "This is a very important issue that needs to be addressed promptly." He outlined the course of action, stating, "The Department will put together a report so I can provide a comprehensive response." The commitment from the Minister for Higher Education and Sports reflects the government's determination to find viable measures to support families navigating the financial challenges associated with tertiary education. The promise of prompt intervention and a comprehensive response aims to ease the concerns of parents and students facing the financial strain of higher education. Also read Comments are closed.
