Electoral Commissioner Patalias Gamato appeared before the Waigani Committal Court for mention this morning. This is in relation to the charges of official corruption, dealing with criminal property, and conspiracy to commit crime. The police prosecutor told the court that the police have completed its investigation into the matter and served the file to Mr Gamato and his lawyer. Mr Gamato’s lawyer said they need time to go through the file and respond. The presiding Magistrate Ernest Wilmot adjourned the case to 3rd April for further mention. Mr Gamato was arrested and charged by police last October in relation to an incident in the 2017 national election in Port Moresby involving the National Capital District Election Manager Terence Hetinu. Police had arrested Mr Hetinu after having found on him more than K184,000 on the eve of the election. Mr Gamato had issued a statement after that, saying the money was for allowances for the election officers. He is on a K3000 National Court bail.
