Papua New Guinea has lost another Member of Parliament, Maprik MP Gabriel Lenny Kapris has died bringing two seating East Sepik MPs who passed on. Wewak MP Kevin Isifu passed on earlier this year. Yesterday, People’s National Congress (PNC) party leader MP Peter O’Neill described the late Kapris as a humble man, one who was respected by his people. “Our PNC party members of Parliament and the entire PNC family throughout the country extend our deepest condolences to the family of the late Honourable Kapris and people of Maprik.” Kapris, who would have turned 60 on Aug 30, died in Port Moresby from a suspected heart attack. East Sepik will go to the polls, in a few weeks, to elect a leader to fill the Wewak Open seat left vacant following the death of late Kevin Isifu.
Kapris is the second MP to die in the 11th Parliament after Isifu. O’Neill said Kapris served as a senior minister in both the Somare and O’Neill governments and was instrumental in the development of several infrastructure and economic projects as Minister for Commerce and Industry, Works and Implementation. Before entering parliament, Kapris was an engineer with companies in the private sector including Bougainville Copper and Eda Ranu (now Water PNG). Kapris was born in Maprik, East Sepik, on Aug 30, 1963. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in engineering, majoring in mechanical from the University Technology, Lae. In 1986, he joined the Department of Works in Wewak as manager of plant and transport then moved to Alotau in 1989 as manager of PNG Water Board. He left in 1990 and worked in Madang. He joined Eda Ranu (now Water PNG) as manager for water operations in 2001, he then left to contest General Election 2002 (GE02). He was elected to the seventh National Parliament in 2002 as Maprik MP. He would go on to retain his seat in the GE07. Kapris lost to John Simon in GE12. In GE22, Kapris contested the Maprik Open under PNC banner, were he polled 16,657 to win, unseating Simon who was running under Pangu. Statement/TheNational/PNGfacts Also read Comments are closed.
