![]() THERE is an estimated 51,269 employed in the manufacturing sector in Papua New Guinea (PNG), says Treasurer Ian Ling-Stuckey. “Employment in PNG’s manufacturing sector has grown since 2019,” he said. Ling-Stuckey said the “pleasing turnaround in manufacturing employment” was discussed on Tuesday with PNG Manufacturing Council’s (PNGMC) chairman Murray Woo and vice-chairman Ashlon Chue. Agriculture Minister Aiye Tambua heard the views on the importance of the manufacturing sector to national development, including links to agriculture and downstream processing. He said employment in the manufacturing sector had hit a record, according to the Bank of PNG’s manufacturing employment index.
Unfortunately, economic mismanagement meant jobs in manufacturing collapsed by 5,726 between 2013 and 2018. “An estimated 7,157 manufacturing jobs have been created since 2019 through to June 2022,” Tambua said. “The PNGMC noted the positive consultations occurring with Customs chief commissioner David Towe and his team.” Ling-Stuckey said they had a constructive discussion at the meeting. “Customs and Treasury will meet shortly to consider a way to address some of the issues raised,” he said. “This may require legislative amendments in the near future. “There is also an argument for a review of tariff policy, including the implications of the special economic zone policies on existing manufacturers. “The Government is committed to growing the economy.” Read more on >> PNG Economy Watch Statement/TheNational/PNGfacts Also read Comments are closed.
