Five police officers have been charged and detained following an alleged break-in at a bottle shop in Boroko, Port Moresby, on New Year’s Eve. National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Silva Sika confirmed the arrests, noting that additional individuals believed to be involved are currently under investigation. Supt. Sika revealed, "Those captured on CCTV cameras were arrested on Tuesday and yesterday," highlighting the swift action taken by the police following the incident's circulation on social media platforms. The Criminal Investigation Division was directed to address the situation promptly, resulting in the arrest of the five officers. According to police reports, the incident unfolded around 9 pm when a man exited the bottle shop and directed officers to the location of his liquor purchase. Superintendent Sika mentioned that the bottle shop was allegedly selling liquor in violation of New Year’s Eve liquor restrictions. He elaborated, stating that the involved officers had requested additional units to aid in the raid of the shop. Superintendent Sika, meanwhile, emphasized the importance of professional conduct among police officers during their duties. Expressing the constabulary’s stance, he asserted, "The constabulary is against such acts by police officers, and we will deal with them accordingly." Superintendent Sika indicated that after addressing the officers involved, the bottle shop owner would face scrutiny. "I will be making recommendations to the NCD Commission liquor board to revoke the license of the business owner if investigations confirm they were selling liquor during the restricted period," he added, outlining plans for subsequent actions pending investigation outcomes. The focus remains on damage control as investigations continue, with the superintendent emphasizing the need for due process and appropriate measures in dealing with both the officers and the bottle shop proprietor.
