Last year (2023), the police in Port Moresby took action against 116 of their own members, resulting in 74 officers currently facing charges related to misconduct. Port Moresby's Assistant Police Commissioner Anthony Wagambie Jr. disclosed these figures, highlighting efforts to address complaints against the police force. "We've seen significant progress in handling disciplinary issues, addressing numerous complaints against our personnel with both administrative and criminal charges," stated Wagambie. "Our commitment to this continues into the new year." Wagambie, overseeing the National Capital District and Central command, emphasized the ongoing efforts to tackle reports of unethical or illegal behavior among officers. "Our focus this year remains on shaping the mindset of individual officers," he added. While protocols and disciplinary systems exist within the constabulary, Wagambie stressed the pivotal role of individual behavior. "Having officers with strong values and morals will result in a more dedicated and focused workforce aligned with our policing objectives," he explained. "But it's not just about us; the community's perception of us shapes our effectiveness." Recent closed-circuit television footage allegedly showing police officers breaking into a shop prompted Wagambie's comments. He confirmed that the implicated officers had been identified for questioning and urged the shop to provide comprehensive footage surrounding the incident. "We're investigating the context leading up to, during, and after the alleged break-in," Wagambie clarified. "Metropolitan Superintendent Silva Sika oversees this investigation." Wagambie reiterated the commitment to discipline officers involved in inappropriate conduct or criminal activities in public. "Our stance remains firm; officers must uphold proper conduct, and we'll take action against those who fail to do so." The pledge for accountability follows the spotlight on reported police misconduct, signaling the police force's determination to address internal issues while maintaining community trust."
