The Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary is gearing up to bolster its ranks with an increase in state service personnel, including civilian manpower, in the upcoming months. Assistant Commissioner of Police – Crimes Hodges Ette confirmed that discussions regarding recruitment have been ongoing without specifying an exact timeline for the major recruitment drive. However, he assured that the process would commence shortly. Mr. Ette emphasized that the augmentation of police officers and support staff has been a focal point of discussions for several years but has yet to be implemented. The Police Force has recently formalized and acknowledged the civilian branch as a legitimate division within the force. Budget allocations have also been made to accommodate this expansion, aimed at enhancing the force's capacity to achieve its mission and goals alongside constables, reservists, auxiliaries, and regular officers. The announcement came as Mr. Ette addressed the graduation parade of 24 police reservists who completed six months of basic training at the Bomana Police College last Friday.
"There is a plan to increase the number of men and women in the police force in the country," Mr. Ette stated. "It has been there for several years." He highlighted the police reservist unit as one of the five major branches within the force, aligning with various ongoing programs such as the Family Sexual and Violence Unit and juvenile services. Addressing the graduates, Mr. Ette welcomed them into the Police Force and underscored the importance of wearing the uniform with pride while serving the nation with respect, humanity, and discipline. "In the capacity of the uniform you wear, you are a member of the police force, serving in the reserve branch," Mr. Ette reminded the graduates. "Your first duty is to serve the people, the branch, and other development agendas with the highest level of integrity, honesty, and discipline." He urged the new recruits, as well as existing members, to uphold professionalism and never waver from the principles of integrity and discipline in their service to the nation. The move towards recruiting additional personnel, including civilians, marks a significant step in the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary's efforts to enhance its operational capabilities and address the evolving challenges faced by law enforcement in the country.
