Alleged Printing and distribution of Ballot papers sees Goroka by-election deferred to Thursday21/9/2020
The start of polling for the Goroka Open By - Election, has been further deferred to Thursday 24th September 2020. Acting Electoral Commissioner Simon Sinai said that the delay is a result of a petition, which was signed by 21 of the total 22 Candidates, who have called for a deferral to sort out a number of issues and allegations. Mr. Sinai said that the candidates are alleging that a print shop in Goroka, is alleged to have printed and distributed ballot papers, which will be used in the eight polling places, in an attempt to rig the election. The Acting Electoral Commissioner in response said that the ballot papers are secured and guarded well, and also contain several security features including serial numbers, which cannot be photocopied or printed by any regular print shop in the country. He also said that the ballot papers are issued according to the number of voters in any polling place, therefore no extra ballots will be allowed. Mr. Sinai also added that the question on the use of security cameras by former Goroka MP and petitioner Bire Kimisopa has also been considered, and they will still go ahead and use the cameras. He said that this is because the cameras will in no way interfere, or capture what choices the voters put on their ballot papers, but will only capture wide angles of the polling and counting venues. Gregory Moses, NBC News, Port Moresby. The use of cameras, is part of a police security management plan, which will be used in polling and counting venues, and it is now being trialed during the Goroka By Election, and it will be used in future elections, if proven to be successful.
