The month of July is not just an ordinary month. It is a special period where it bursts-open the windows of opportunity to every political-line, who will then select a shepherd that will safeguard their welfare as constituted. Today is the day to deliver our birth-right to a leader, hoping that honesty, transparency and accountability prevails and that our wealth is sustainably nourished and fairly distributed. But before mastering that golden choice after waiting for the past five years, buy some time to evaluate a reality check. Have you fully enjoyed all the rights as enshrined in the organic law and the universal declaration of human rights? How many citizens live below the poverty line? Is our dependency ratio healthy? How is our illiteracy and unemployment status? Is the cost of living equivalent to the daily ends-meet? There are in fact several unreachable areas where we face negligence but we seem to take it lightly when it comes to choosing leaders. Let’s hop away from the recurring cycle. We have had enough along the way. Today is our only chance to showcase our willingness to direct our own developments. Take a positive approach towards every affair that concerns the common-good. Let’s uphold the transition theme of taking back our country as what our ambitious prime minister aimed for. Make a choice that will benefit the bulk of our population rather than for personal gains, which normally leaves us with nothing more than injustice. It would imply selfishness if we vote for someone who is within our circle but lacks reliable policies, or someone from a bigger clientelism network but known for corruption, or someone that incorporates force, threats, intimidation or money. Terminate the trend of money politics, or the so called neretere politics. It is only helping us to dump our votes into the drain while awaiting positive results. This is not a cargo-cult business. It is concerning our lives. Bear in mind that after you cast your votes within those few seconds, its impact will last for five years or more. Even if it bears a positive or negative outcome, it is still the result of our actions. So what will our children call us if we fail to elect a loyal leader? Should we be responsible for our decisions? Are we good guardians? Although every citizen is aware of our political-culture, puzzled by money politics, clientelism and political instability, they have been deprived so much that today is the moment for just decisions. Rise up PNG! Enough of ignoring the realities while remaining stubborn and stagnant. Vote a charismatic leader for real change. They are the diamonds in the dirt.
