By Brian Folock Amidst the current political developments in Southern Highlands Province, some facebook users throwing names of leaders including the Member for Ialibu Pangia and the former Prime Minister Peter O'Neil. One poster briefly put or asked the name of the Prime Minister at the time of now the ousted Governor William Powi's 'declaration' invoking that law on Special Circumstances. To put on record, the former PM, when approached at Alotau Camp in 2017 by William Powi team to endorse the short cut declaration, the reputable former PM said these as I quote: "SHP is our province and whoever gets elected will be part of our team. I should not agree with any of such declaration. We should go back and complete the counting. Let the processes of election determine a winner. I do not want problems in SHP". These are his exact words. His hands are clean. He did not approve such declaration, bypassing election laws. His exact words above. But we failed to respect his views thus saw his precautions coming into reality - the mayhem in Mendi town. He also suffered the effects of such actions. He lost millions worth properties.
Some say that William Powi was party to the former PMPO's ousting as prime minister of Papua New Guinea. I bet us all this is not true. James Marabe led a coup within the former ruling Party, the PNC and the floods to oust him (PO) was high. Pressure was mounting for him to step down as PM. MPs like Bryan Kramer led an aggressive campaign against his prime ministership on all Social Media networks leaving the former PM no choice but to step down. He did not step down. He allowed a transition, invited James Marabe group to Grand Papuan Hotel and blessed him with the PM post by surrendering his group to the Marabe and Powi group. Peter O'Neil is a humble and cool headed politician. He wanted one of his own to take over from him thereby allowing the transition. Moral of the story is William Powi did not oust PO. PO gave in himself and did the honorable thing to let the PM post remain in Hela/Souths. PO knows Powi very well - in terms of national politics, national affairs and resources management. PO knows his feats and political articulativity are unmatched with anyone within his province as was evident when he became the PM back on the 2nd of November 2011. No one Southern Highlands politician aided or supported him to become the PM. He believes in himself and says even if it means one man forming the government, he definitely would do. Every SHP politicians are his backbone and he knows as long as he keeps the "houseman", all will enter - join him. Yu wokim nogut long em, em ino save bisi. Nogat true. When he allowed James Marabe to be PM, his last words were as I quote; "I need to rest for a while. Let the country compare and see what wrong I have done". The recent Court Decision on the Election Petition has got nothing to do with him as well. Justice actually prevailed. The Courts delivered their own findings. PO did not influence the decision as inidicated by Judge David Cunnings 23 Paged ruling. Where is the order or part that PO influenced? There is virtually nothing there. Lawyers can verify if there is any political interference. The Member of Parliament representing Ialibu Pangia Hon Peter O'Neil is a national icon and is from Southern Highlands. He has no grievance with any politician from SHP. He would still need them to form the next 2022 National Government if it is an inclusive of now the ousted Governor. So supporters, facebook users everybody should preserve some reservations for the former PM and give due respect as his feats are incomparable with any of our MPs and Leaders from SHP or even the country. Stop all these political sarcasms.
