By Petrus Gand It is the 21st century and yet our leaders are seemingly blind-folded. In recent years most of the government revenues have been spared on sports for a few minority. PNG even has a separate sports portfolio, accompanied by a specific Minister who is held responsible through its legislated powers. The nation’s budget is purposely allocated to facilitate its operations, just like any other imperative Ministry portfolios. Often it is observed that much of the state’s returns are exhausted to develop youngsters via sports, as well as establishing several sporting stadiums instead of hospitals, schools and other ‘enabling environment’ where people can partake and nurture their well-being. Countries that concentrate more on leisure activities are those that are overdeveloped, such as in the case of USA who was liberated in 1776, Australia our leading inspiration who was granted independence around 1906, and so on. They are economically sustainable and politically matured and that there is a natural tendency to amuse their citizens. Unlike PNG, since our sovereignty was born in 1975 where our politicians are imparted by corruption, resulting in limited long-term developments. PNG will eventually reach the stage for entertainment when we have a better living standard, a decline in Global Poverty Rate (GPR), and have as many impact projects as possible. In spite of not being near any of these, the GoPNG is abusing our resources by doing something that is unreliably hypocritical in nature. While the athletes donate few to none to PNG’s economy, the tax payers’ money is disposed over them. They are having a joy-ride by enjoying their privileges, when in actuality, they are plain liabilities. To make matters worse, many of the upcoming elites who are expected to contribute to the integral development of this country are driven to this foolish yet lazy zone. And when their sporting-career ends, they would be fortunate if they are educated but if they aren’t, assuredly they will accumulate in the informal sector and escalate crime rates all over in PNG. If PNG craves to progress without any pointless priorities, then the Sports Ministry must be dismantled and be substituted by an obligatory portfolio such as the Ministry for Natural Resource, Corruption Sentry, Infrastructural Developments, Nationalization and State Entities, and many other vital mechanisms that will have fruitful impacts. Our allies are more interested in our resources than what we are to become. They will always rejoice when we fail to pull our socks and keep on doing what they want us to do. Though sport is a standard requirement across nations, we will still devote our efforts when the timing is right, once we are fully developed both politically and economically.
