By Petrus GAND Gratitudes to Susan Karike Huhume for her outsmarting precedency hailed when designing our national flag in 1971. It has reflected our national face throughout our political reign for decades. Certainly, our land is known by our allied neighbours as a land of a thousand tribes that dwells on an island of gold – floating on the sea of oil – inhaling the air of natural gasses. Indeed every spectacle of our values has been showcased via our flag but something is still hindering our progress despite our wealthy status. Therefore, there is an ominous vitality for a moment of clarity where we replicate on the root factor that is handicapping us. Utterly, there is so much to acknowledge and appreciate Karike’s delightful contribution to our race as a sovereign state amid the global communities but, there are some specks of grime that are splattering on our pride. Although our flag is a prominent part of our inherited and constructed culture, it is also a part of the issues we encounter at our very sight. Simultaneously, we can either ignore the errors in our own distinctiveness and continue as often and be troubled until a turning point emerges, or we repair our constructed emblem with the accurate pictogram of our personality and prosper limitlessly. Having said that, there is a prerequisite to review, reflect and repair our flag. All the essential components are meticulously conciliated except the flying bird of paradise and our missing Cristian identity. When discerningly glancing at our authorized symbol, it has turned out that the yellowish bird is flying backward. It could be a factor that is psychologically lashing the constituents to travel backward or rather regress diminishingly. For decades, our overall morale has been very low – indicating the vast influence of western societies in our lives. We usually expect and accept the whites to make everything possible for us. And this is wrong. It is our land – our duty to set things right. Let the bird ascend outward! Also, as a Cristian nation where we embrace and incarnate the religious ideologies in our constitution, a religious symbol on our flag would be much safer and precisely important for our identity. It will have better beneficiaries compared to the ancient King James-Version bible inculcated on the parliament’s lectern where it lies idle and unnoticed by the world. Thus, it is essential to ensure the bird flies upright-out for exploration, while implanting a cross sign onto our flag. With that, we could change mentally, spiritually and socially. The alteration would directly and indirectly restore our genuine identity for a better and brighter future so that our generations will appreciate that they were part of our genealogy.
