By Samuel Raitano When assessing the calibre of candidates vying for the seat left by the late Sir Mekere Morauta, I see alot of powerful and reputable persons in the likes of Sir Arnold Amet, Lohia Boe Samuel and so forth. Port Moresby NorthWest is a Part of NCD that accommodates people of different ethnicities and races inclusive of the indigenous landowners. Many women, children and Persons Living With Disabilities (PLWD) in the Nation's Capital face alot of challenges. It could be monetary struggles, family violence, lack of education opprtunities and other means of making ends meet each day. I remember, some years back when I was with PNGFM and had an assignment to attend a press conference by the Disability Foundation headed by the late Brown Kapi at Hohola. As keen as I was, and having a family member living with disability back home up in the Highlands, I asked Mr Kapi alot of different questions regarding their welfare and how sufficiently the government was taking stock of PLWDs throughout the country.
One of the things he highlighted was the lack of Policies that capture workable programs to assist and improve services to the PLWDs. And not only them, but the able mothers and youths have no inclusive programs for meaningful participation of the margianalized citizens and members of the society. In Port Moresby Northwest, it should be about giving the power to the women and girls. Let the markets be open to local vendors, especially Motu Koita women. These are the kind of people that need help and protection from us men. Port Moresby and PNG women need a voice of a woman. There are enough men. Call me rough, retard, violent, whatever name you have for a Highlands man, but if I were in Port Moresby, my first preference would have gone to a woman none other than Anna Bais. I see in her the chance for Port Moresby and PNG to have a former Department Head and a Legislator in one, to help propose necessary changes for the women, children and margianalized citizens right across PNG.
