All public servants working with the Sandaun Provincial Administration have been instructed to stay away from work as of today.
Provincial Administrator Henry Norm confirmed instructing public servants to leave their places of work as the Member for Vanimo Green River, Belden Namah, returned to the province on Sunday to continue serving as the Governor. Mr. Namah told a crowd outside the Provincial Administration building, he was duly elected by the provincial assembly. But the Provincial Administration and the National Government do not recognize him as the Governor as they say proper processes were not followed in his election. Mr Namah arrived in the office this morning but saw that the place had been deserted and called for the immediate resignation of Mr Norm as the Provincial Administrator. Mr Norm says he directed public servants to vacate their offices sensing the situation tense especially with the declaration of the Governor elect last Saturday. The Provincial Administrator says his decision to send officers away is to protect government properties if there was a confrontation. In July, the Director of Assembly Services with the Sandaun Provincial Administration Simon M'Ledu was suspended by the Provincial Administrator. Mr M'Ledu was suspended for his role in facilitating the election of Belden Namah as Governor in April this year. Mr M'Ledu facilitated the convening of the provincial assembly at the Dasi district office instead of the normal Vanimo council chambers where 13 of the total 18 LLG presidents including two town mayors elected Mr Namah. Soon after that, a team from the department of provincial and local level government affairs visited the province to investigate the procedure and process used in the election. NBC/PNGFACTS
