Auxicillary Policemen in the company of regular police officers must refrain from continuous harassment of PMV drivers and their crews at designated bus stops in the nation’s capital. Harassment in terms of confiscating bus keys from the drivers or removing the Driver’s license and Crew Permit. FM100 contacted Assistant Commissioner Police, NCD/Central Commander Anthony Wagambie Junior, after receiving complaints that policemen tend to remove keys from the drivers, and leave the PMVs standing idle, then take off with the keys, most times expecting the PMV Owners or Drivers and Crew to, allegedly, give them some money before they can release the keys back to the drivers. This behaviour has become a norm in the city, where PMV Drivers tend to accept this happening every day. According to some drivers and crews, they are being held up if they are not parked properly at the designated bus stops or when they just pick up and move on without sitting in line to call out for passengers. The owners are complaining that they have bought their buses by securing bank loans and need to repay the loan and cannot afford to have policemen removing keys from the drivers and leave while the helpless PMV driver just sit in the bus and wait for the keys to be returned, not before giving some money to the officer. The bus owners say, indirectly, they are making a loss for the day, if the bus is not working for half a day or even the whole day. “ What I will do is check this out but at the same time PMV drivers and their crew must be fully licensed to be driving around in the city and that the PMV owners must ensure their buses are road worthy” “ I will make sure this stops and if it is serious, drivers and their crew will be arrested and charged as well to avoid all kinds of illegal activities from some police officers.” “ I know its got to do with reservists or auxicillary policemen doing this with the help of some regulars,” he said. He has promised to sort this out with the Police Station Commanders and their Zone commanders. Meanwhile, OIC NCD Traffic , Senior Inspector Joseph Salle came out in one of the dailies last week stating that Police Officers and Road Safety Officers are not allowed to take away the driver’s license and then tell them to drive without one, which is against the law. According to him, they do not have the power to charge the Traffic offenders but can only issue Traffic Infringement Notices (TIN) if they find them committing any traffic offences.
