The Chief Secretary to Government, Sir Manasupe Zurenuoc, has provided clarity in relation the wording and use of the National Anthem.
Sir Manasupe made the comments amidst ongoing discussion of the National Anthem following the opening ceremony of the XV Pacific Games, noting that in any public debate it is important that people have the facts. "According to the National Identity Act there is only one officially recognised national anthem," the Chief Secretary said. "According to the Act, the Head of State acting on the advice of the National Executive Council, officially declares the words of the national anthem. "This declaration was made shortly before independence. "I wish to confirm that there has been no change to the official anthem." Sir Manasupe said any change to the National Anthem would require careful and informed debate. "It is possible to change the words of the anthem. "The National Executive Council can advise the Head of State to revise the words of the national anthem. "However, this would only be done after proper consultation and is a matter for the people to decide."
