There has been considerable improvement in PNG’s efforts to achieving its Millennium Development Goal (MDG) targets in the last three years, Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill said yesterday.
With the target date being 2015, PNG may have left it till late, but there was cause for Papua New Guineans to be very optimistic about the future, Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill said. He said visiting UNDP Regional Director for Asia and Pacific Haoling Zu was impressed with PNG’s efforts in education, health, infrastructure and good governance. “We have made great stride in the last three years as a result of the policies our government has introduced, and the programs we are implementing now,” the Prime Minister told a party caucus meeting last night. “There are 2 million children in school now (80% enrolment) as a result of our free education policy; there are more mothers and children getting access to health care as a result of our free health care policy; our infrastructure development program is improving business environment and creating opportunities; our national anti corruption strategy on track with legislations to enable ICAC to be enacted later this year,” he said. The Prime Minister said the government will work closely with UNDP and other relevant organizations to ensure outstanding MDG programs will be carried over to the post 2015 successor initiative. Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill was addressing a caucus meeting of the People’s National Congress party last night in Port Moresby. The party held an extraordinary meeting to discuss the 2015 Budget framework, its focus on key sectors, and the success of DSIP and PSIP in the districts and provinces. Members welcomed the Prime Minister’s address, and urged that the budget focus on key sectors in education, health, law and order and infrastructure continue. Comments are closed.
