The Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill is leading Papua New Guinea’s delegation to the 45th Pacific Islands’forum leaders meeting in Palau in the coming week. Prime Minister departs today and will stop over in Singapore where he will meet with directors of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Secretariat. Mr O’Neill said there are a number of important issues that Papua New Guinea will discuss at the Forum meeting including regional economic growth, education, healthcare and the effects of climate change. A decision will also be made on the new Secretary General of the Pacific Islands’ Forum Secretariat. “The Pacific Islands’ Forum is a chance for the leaders of our region to meet, to talk openly and work together to advance our region. “I look forward to sharing Papua New Guinea’s experience with my counterparts. “Our country has seen ups and downs over the decades, but now we have positive economic growth and we are dramatically expanding access to healthcare and education. “We wish to give support and encouragement to our Pacific partners in strengthening their economies and social programs, particularly when facing threats such as climate change. “I will also be discussing with fellow leaders my support for Dame Meg Taylor to be selected as the next Secretary General of the Forum Secretariat. “Dame Meg Taylor is an extraordinary person who has demonstrated her capability in dealing with challenges affecting disadvantaged communities in the region. “She is a natural leader who can bring people together and achieve results.” The Prime Minister’s meeting with directors from the APEC Secretariat will also provide an opportunity to discuss preparations for Papua New Guinea to host APEC in 2018. “The APEC Secretariat in Singapore has been very supportive of Papua New Guinea as we prepare to host APEC and I look forward to our discussion. “Hosting APEC is a significant logistical undertaking, but for which there are tremendous results for the host economy and the region. “Between now and when we host APEC Leaders in 2018, thousands of officials and business people will visit Papua New Guinea. “Together we will strengthen commerce and investment, and improve the lives of all people in the Asia-Pacific.“Hosting APEC in 2018 will provide a great opportunity for Papua New Guinea to make a significant contribution to as well as receive the benefits of increase trade, business and jobs in our region.”
