A former policeman, Komeng Gubag, has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for the shooting deaths of Ivan Nason and Laki Yamo in a Port Moresby settlement. The incident, which occurred on October 23, 2021, shocked the community and raised questions about police conduct. Presiding over the case in the National Court at Waigani, Judge Teresa Berrigan handed down the sentence yesterday. Gubag, originally from Karkar’s Vakong village in Madang, will serve a reduced term of 32 years, six months, and 20 days, with time already spent in custody taken into account. During the trial, it was revealed that Gubag, who was off duty at the time, was intoxicated and causing disturbances in the Garden Hills settlement. When on-duty officers responded to the scene, Gubag seized a handgun and pursued a group of men, ultimately shooting Nason and Yamo. Judge Berrigan emphasized the severity of the crimes, particularly highlighting Yamo's murder as a deliberate act of violence against an unarmed and defenseless individual. She condemned Gubag's abuse of authority as a police officer, stating that his actions tarnished the reputation of the entire police force and eroded public trust. Gubag's statement during the trial reflected his belief that he was above the law, especially when dealing with residents of settlements whom he perceived as "petty criminals." Judge Berrigan stressed that such behavior undermines the rule of law and the efforts of law enforcement officers who serve with integrity. The sentencing sends a clear message that police officers who violate the law will face severe consequences. Gubag will serve his sentence at Bomana prison, located outside Port Moresby.
