PNG Ports Embarks on Green Collaboration with European Union for Rabaul Port Rehabilitation5/4/2024
In a significant development aimed at enhancing resilience to climate change and natural disasters while advancing greener port operations, PNG Ports Corporation Limited's Rabaul Port is poised for substantial rehabilitation work. The endeavor stems from the signing of the Declaration of Intent on sustainable port infrastructure rehabilitation between the European Union (EU), the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), the European Investment Bank (EIB), the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), and PNG Ports in 2023. The agreement outlines a collaborative effort to fortify PNG Ports as a modern, reliable, safe, and sustainable State-Owned Enterprise (SOE), consequently improving maritime trade through sustainable port infrastructure. As part of the EU's Global Gateway Strategy, a total of €75 million (K305 million) has been earmarked to upgrade the Port of Rabaul. This financial package will cover various aspects including feasibility studies, dredging, upgrading of land-side facilities, wharf extension, and repair works. During a recent meeting in Port Moresby with representatives from the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), Ian Hayden-Smart, Officer In Charge of PNG Ports, emphasized that the signing of the Declaration of Intent and the rehabilitation of Rabaul Port signify significant progress towards the sustainable development of PNG's maritime ports. Hayden-Smart highlighted the pivotal role of Rabaul Port as the gateway for trade in the East New Britain Province, stressing the importance of ensuring its readiness to meet maritime trade demands. He reiterated that the Rabaul Port rehabilitation project aligns with the PNG Government's commitment to implementing green initiatives and enhancing resilience to the global impacts of climate change at ports nationwide. "The Rabaul Port Project is in line with PNG Ports' broader investment strategy for several ports, as outlined in our Infrastructure Master Plan," said Mr. Hayden-Smart, acknowledging DFAT's funding allocation for other port upgrades. "PNG Ports is dedicated to upgrading its port facilities to be sustainable, fit for purpose, and resilient to climate and disaster risks, and this collaboration with EU, EIB, and DFAT will greatly facilitate this goal," he added. Following collaborative meetings between AFD and PNG Ports, a feasibility study for Rabaul Port, conducted by DT Global, has commenced. Construction is anticipated to begin in July 2025 upon completion of the detailed design and tender process. Also read Comments are closed.
