Papua New Guinea, Prime Minister James Marape outlined the government's ambitious goal of implementing a formal identification system through a biometric process before the next National General Election. The announcement came in response to queries from the Member for Talasea regarding improvements to the electoral process.
Prime Minister Marape explained that the initial step involves completing the National Census this year. Following the census, an updated common roll will be established. Subsequently, the government plans to utilize the data gathered for proper identification through the National Identification (NID) program. Only after these crucial steps, Marape emphasized, can the implementation of a biometric voting system be undertaken in preparation for the 2027 elections in Papua New Guinea. The Prime Minister highlighted the collaboration with the Minister Assisting the Prime Minister on Constitutional Matters to facilitate the seamless execution of these initiatives before the upcoming election cycle. Acknowledging the longstanding challenges associated with the voting system and election processes in Papua New Guinea, Marape assured the Parliament that concerted efforts are underway to establish a more transparent and improved voting system. The aim is to prevent potential corrupt practices during the next election and instill greater confidence in the electoral process. Watch Video Also read Comments are closed.
