Prime Minister Peter O'Neill says, government has embarked on addressing public service issue in the country.
He admits, that there is a lack of discipline and breakdown in the public service which has built up over the years. He says, other factors like court cases filed against the State, has also hindered the governance systems in effectively delivering services. But, Mr O'Neill says, the reform undertaken by the Public Service Department is looking at addressing public service issues. "Our employees the public servants are taking the government to court every day, so we are not able to, sometimes, appoint the right people, sometimes build capacity, train the right people. "So generally there is a discipline breakdown everywhere. "Mr. Speaker, with the new recent Public Service Management Act that we passed, the Public Service Minister is now bringing in the tribunal system that was working before in the 1970s and 80s, where if you have a dispute and you are a public servant, you don't have to run to court. "You go to the tribunal and it will then determine your case whether you have a case before it or not. "So those are the improvement that we are doing," The Prime Minister said. Mr O'Neill was responding to questions in Parliament from Northern Province Governor Garry Juffa, about lack of public service response to disasters. Comments are closed.
