The Leader of the People’s National Congress Party, Peter O’Neill has extended his congratulations to Ishmael Toroama upon his election as the incoming President of the Autonomous Bougainville Government. The former Prime Minister said in a statement the election of Ishmael Toroama is another important milestone for the Bougainville Peace Process and the leadership of Mr. Toroama will be vital as all parties work to implement successful outcomes from the referendum. Mr. O'Neil further stated that Peace and future prosperity for the people of Bougainville is our great desire, and working with Mr. Toroama and elected members of the ABG, all Members of the National Parliament must continue to work towards these shared objectives.
He stressed that the troubles that all of our people have been through, not only since the first confrontations in the 1980s, but through the many years that lead to the boiling over of tensions, and every day must always be part of our understanding of the issues we are confronted with moving forward. He said the current National Government and the next Government must engage in transparent, open, and mature dialogue with Mr. Toroama and other leaders in the ABG and respect the demonstrated aspirations of the people of Bougainville. Mr. O'Neil also said importantly every one must take very clear notice of the outcome of the referendum and seek pathways to which everyone can agree. He added that the PNC Party in Government has always supported the decentralization of power and authority so that people around the country can chart their own destinies while enjoying the benefits of shared strength. Meantime, Mr. O'Neil thanked the former President of Bougainville, Grand Chief John Momis for his commitment to working together over the years, his desire for ongoing peace, and improving the lives of Bougainvilleans.
