PNG Prime Minister James Marape says funds used for COVID-19 operations are public funds and a report on its use will be made available for public scrutiny. Mr Marape said this following a question by the media yesterday in a press conference whether there will be an external audit into COVID-19 funds. Marape says the police minister is currently doing an initial audit of the use of COVID-funds and will present the report to him. But the PM says all funds coming in for COVID-19 are put into only the Health Trust account, which he says donor partners including the Australian Government, WHO and others also have an oversight over because they funds coming in are also parked into this same trust account. Hence, Marape says there’s a minimum chance of funds being abused. The PM assures the nation that funds meant for COVID-19 are used for its intended purpose. Marape says there’s a procurement team inplace to ensure all the procurements are done consistently in accordance to the procurement manual that the SOE team has set up. He also welcomes the Public Accounts Committee who has made its intention known to visit the National Operations Center and see what they are doing.
