Prime Minister Peter O’Neill has welcomed the district court’s decision to set aside a warrant of arrest obtained by a policeman in connection with ongoing investigations in the Paul Paraka Lawyers payments.
"I welcome the court’s decision in finding the warr-ants defective, and setting them aside. That is what I maintained, and that is why our lawyers went to court," Mr O’Neill said. The warrants were issued by the district court late last year for the arrest of the Prime Minister, Finance Minister James Marape and Treasurer Don Polye alleging the three leaders gave directions for the payments to be made to the law firm. "The investigation into the Paul Paraka Lawyers payments were initiated in the first place by myself, and it will continue and be completed following the rule of law and due processes. "This investigation is at an advanced stage by Task Force Sweep, a legally constituted body with jurisdiction over this matter. Let us allow them to complete the job and make their findings known. "We will not allow political expediency to overtake the proper lawful processes," the Prime Minister stressed. "The glaring error on the warrant, as pointed out by the court in its decision, raises serious questions about the propriety of the process employed by those behind this saga. "I must warn those who want to continue to flaunt due and lawful processes, they will be dealt with by the full force of the law." The Prime Minister has since announced that a task force will be set up by the Commissioner of Police Tom Kulunga to investigate the apparent collaboration between Namah and some rogue policemen to obtain a warrant of arrest and a court order, outside of the normal lawful process. Mr O’Neill also lodged a formal complaint on this against Mr Namah with the police which would ensure a thorough investigation by the task force. He has also laid a formal complaint against Mr Namah on his attack on the Chief Justice during the impasse period, when Mr Namah charged into the court house and tried to arrest the Chief Justice.
