New Zealand will provide K16.6 million for the redevelopment of Gordon Market in Port Moresby, one of the largest in the city.
The market’s re-development aims to change the style and environment of fresh produce marketing in the city. Wellington pledged to provide the NZ$7m funding through the United Nation’s Safe Cities Programme in partnership with the National Capital District Commission. Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully said the redevelopment of the market was within New Zealand’s overall support for agricultural development in Papua New Guinea. McCully said his government was committed to help PNG develop as much as possible and “at all times ready to help whenever necessary”. He said PNG people relied on agriculture. United Nations Women PNG Country Representative Dr Jeffrey Buchanan said the funding would see a complete refurbishment of the market. “Hardworking market vendors deserve to have a modern, clean, safe and accessible place to earn a living,” Buchanan said. “Under this partnership with the NZ Government, the Safe Cities Programme will rebuild Gordon’s market, utilising all available space to maximise economic opportunities for vendors, customers and the community.” Speaking on behalf of Governor Powes Parkop, Moresby South MP and Sports Minister Justin Tkatchenko thanked the New Zealand government and said the market’s renovation would improve the lives of thousands of Papua New Guineans.
