Police in Lae intercepted four boxes of explosives from five suspects who were transporting the items out of the residential area of West Taraka when their operation was disturbed, police however did not apprehend the suspects as they abandoned the boxes and fled when police located them. The boxes contained one hundred dynamites and detonators which were confirmed active and dangerous and could be set off anytime according to PNGDF bomb Experts when they were called in to inspect the explosives. Lae Metropolitan Superintendent. Anthony Wagambie Jr says it is unknown what the explosives were to be used for or where it came from as there have not been any reports of stolen explosives further adding that having such items being possessed by people is dangerous to the wellbeing of the general public as well as infrastructure. Mr. Wagambie said it was fortunate that the bomb didn’t explode whilst it was in the residential area as it would have caused some major damage. The movement of the boxes was called in by an off duty senior police officer who was tipped off to which Mr. Wagambie commended his swift actions as well of those who reported it. “We will get to the bottom of this and deal with those responsible” says Mr. Wagambie.
