Manus MP Ronny Knight said reports of asylum seekers setting fires to the camp, causing damage and injuring other asylum seekers are not true.
Mr. Knight told the ABC that the situation was only a disagreement between members of the group on Sunday afternoon, which resulted in seven of them ending up in local cells, with charges slapped on them. Mr. Knight, said while the matter was minor, agreed that this could be the result of growing frustrations on the people not being processed quickly - a process Mr. Knight said Immigration Minister Rimbink Pato is still working on. Mr. Knight said with growing frustration in the camp, there could be no guessing of what else might happen in the future. He said those detained on Manus come from a violent and gun culture, and it would be dangerous if they were to take control of an armoury. He further said there is a high chance that genuine refugees will be rejected to be resettled in PNG, especially in Manus, where the people would be up against the idea. PNG laws allow for a person to reside in the country for 8-years before being considered for citizenship - a wait which Mr. Knight said will be unbearable for the asylum seekers. Comments are closed.
