PRIME Minister Shinzo Abe plans to visit Papua New Guinea and New Zealand during his trip to Australia in early July.
It will be the first time in 29 years that a Japanese prime minister is visiting PNG since Yasuhiro Nakasone came in 1985, and the first time in 12 years that a Japanese prime minister has visited New Zealand since Junichiro Koizumi’s trip in 2002. An investment accord between Japan and PNG, a nation with abundant natural resources, took effect in January and Japanese firms are able to operate businesses under the same conditions as local companies in PNG, Japanese newspaper the Yomiuri Shimbun said. In the planned summit with Prime Minister Peter O’Neill, Abe is expected to call for further improvements in the business environment to encourage Japanese business ventures by allowing greater ease in making investments and starting corporate activities in the country, the paper said. PNG was a gruelling battlefield in the Pacific War, and about 127,600 Japanese died in the country. The remains of 76,820 were still in the country as of the end of last month. Abe is likely to ask O’Neill to cooperate in the Japanese government’s project to recover the remains during the summit meeting, the paper said. In a meeting with New Zealand Prime Minister John Key, Abe plans to exchange opinions regarding cooperation in disaster prevention and other issues as New Zealand is an earthquake-prone nation like Japan.
