A person charge with misappropriating monies to rebuilt a church in East New Britain has been sentenced to seven years in prison with hard labour.
Peter Tokunai was sentenced by the National Court yesterday in Port Moresby last Thursday. Tokunai from East New Britain was convicted of dishonestly applying K1.5 million kina to his own use. The Malaguna Catholic Church is incomplete and the community are without a proper place to worship, as a result of his action. Tokunai had applied for funds to rebuild a new church by submitting a proposal to the National Planning Department in 2011. The court found only K110 thousand was used but K1.4 million disappeared. Deputy Chief Justice, Sir Gibbs Sialka said, Tokunai had abused trust placed by his people as well as the concerned department. He sentenced Tokunai to 7 years in prison.
