THE wholesale internet price in Papua New Guinea will continue to drop, with a major price reduction expected to be announced next month or early next year, an official says. PNG DataCo Limited chief executive officer Paul Komboi yesterday announced a 66 per cent reduction in one its product – the point-to-point metro fiber service. “The Government has set objectives for us. We have been around seven to eight years now in the industry and done a lot in terms of price reduction,” he said. “The more volume we get, the more we will continue to reduce.”
From 2014 to 2018, he said there was not much volume. But in the past three years, “we got a lot of volume – around 4 gigabytes on average up to 23 GB”. “That’s what is reducing the pricing,” Komboi said. The reduction is expected to start on Monday. “We are promoting growth and advocating for huge price reductions offered to retailers who need to pass some of that benefits to the customers,” Komboi said. DataCo has 102 customers in PNG, including conglomerates from abroad. “This service is now affordable to the people of PNG and you can now get that services which are from our customers who are those retail service providers out there. “And talk to them, make sure that cost savings is passed on to the public.” He urged people to report if the price reduction is not passed on to them. “Talk to us, or raise that complaint with the Independent Consumer and Competition Commission or National Information Communications Technology Authority,” he said.
