PORT MORESBY: The political interference of constitutional offices holds a bleak future for the country, says Deputy Opposition Leader Sam Basil. “Our constitutional office holders are totally controlled by a few politicians. “The next government will not have confidence in these officer holders so we may look up to another democratic country like ours to recruit,” Mr Basil told reporters in a media conference flanked by Opposition Leader Don Polye, Lae MP Loujaya Kouza, Goilala MP William Samb and Kikori MP Mark Maipakai. When commenting on the denial of legal representation for the heads of National Fraud and Anti-Corruption directorate, he said public trust on these officers has eroded, adding the country has to improve on this. “By seeing how things are being handled by the constitutional office holders, I, as an MP, feel that they are not doing their jobs well. Basil made reference to Vanuatu’s judiciary as vibrant, following the imprisonment of MPs by the Supreme Court. He added that PNG had to imitate from that in light of a chain of allegation of corruption against a number of politicians. Meanwhile, Mr Basil has joined the Opposition Leader Don Polye to express concerns over the slow implementation of Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) and Whistle Blowers Act. “No wander the Prime Minister Peter O’Neill knows it very well that these laws will come back and bite him from the back if implemented fully,” he said.
