The famous Hiri-Moale Festival is expected to be much bigger and better this year with thousands of participants and visitors expected to attend.
Preparations for the festival is well underway with more than 65 dancing groups from Gulf province, Central and the Motuan villagers showing interest to participate. More than 50 racing canoes will take part in the celebration with an increased number of young women participating in the Hiri Queen competition. Mats, armbands and shells, clay pots and sago making are among items to be displayed. Motu-Kaitabu Assembly Chairman Miria Ikupu, says they have completed signing of all contracts to start construction of the Lagatoi and the festival stage at Ela Beach. Mr Ikupu says the the festival honours the legendary trade between the fore fathers of the Motuan villages and the people of Gulf province. The festival will held on the 15th and 16th of September, to coincide with PNG's 39th Independence celebration. Comments are closed.
