The West New Britain Provincial Assembly who met on the eve of Independence (15th September) has elected Talasea MP Francis Maneke as the new Governor of the province. Maneke was elected unopposed following the swearing in of the 12 LLG Presidents. The Governor’s post was vacant when Sasindran Muthuvel was appointed as the State Enterprise Minister in the Marape Steven Government. The Provincial Assembly had earlier met and voted Maneke but it was taken to court by Kandrian Gloucester MP Joseph Lelang. However, the court ruled that the election was null and void and ordered for a re-election be held after the LLG elections. Mr. Lelang was absent for the Assembly sitting on Sunday 15th September. Maneke while accepting the mandate of taking up the role as the governor of the province said, it is the first for the province that a Regional MP had opted to take up National duties thereby creating a vacancy that led to the election of an Open MP by the Provincial Assembly to be the Governor. Maneke assured the presidential leaders that he will provide the leadership with passion and shall strive to maintain the standard set by former Governor Sasindran Muthuvel.
