The people living in the Community Mine Continuation Agreement area are NOT happy with the current royalty payments they are receiving from the Ok Tedi Mine.
A recent road survey conducted in the area by NBC Western shows, majority of the recipients are frustrated and unhappy about the current eighty-Kina royalty they are receiving. A community leader, speaking on the condition of anonymity told NBC News, the amount is NOT enough compared to the level of destruction caused to their lives and environment. He described the situation as a genocide by O-T-M-L and the government of P-N-G. The leader said "what every person is receiving is not equivalent to the damage caused to our environment." The spokesperson, who's a former employee of O-T-M-L in the early 70's, is also a plaintiff in a case against O-T-M-L. He has filed a two-part litigation in the Supreme Court - the rights of the people and environmental damage to the Fly River system. Responding to the Government's recent calls to have a tailings dam constructed, the community leader said, "what difference will it make when we have the damage done already?" "The Fly River system is already gone! The livelihood of our people, if any, is gone!" NBC News understands, it will take 50 to 100 years for the natural occurrences to help rehabilitate the once beautiful outback of the Fly River. Comments are closed.
