The Australian Doctors International has reported that PNG’s current ratio of doctor to patient stands at 1 to 17,068, compared to 20 per 20,000 in Fiji. There is a rising concern that graduating medical workers are entering more urban centres rather then rural areas where majority of the people reside. There is a need according to experts for more medical facilities and interested youths who are willing and able to take up this much needed profession. Right now, less then 450 registered doctors are serving at various centres and this is still not enough to cater for an increasing population.
