Candidates who have been convicted after 25th June 2002, have been given until this Friday, 17th June to withdraw their nominations. Electoral Commissioner Simon Sinai gave them seven days - after issuance of a notice last Friday 10th June. Mr Sinai says the PNG Electoral Commission will screen each of the more than 3,000 candidates who have nominated, to verify their eligibility to contest the election. He says some are known convicts while information on others are scarce.
Mr Sinai says the PNG Electoral Commission will seek assistance from the court registry, public prosecutor, the correctional service and other relevant state departments to establish the eligibility of each candidate. He says if ex convicts insist on contesting, he will revoke their nomination in compliance with the Supreme Court orders, once their status is confirmed. This is in line with the Supreme Court ruling on candidates eligibility in line with the constitution.
