China's Presidnet Xi is expected to meet Pacific Islands leaders at a summit in Fiji. PAPUA New Guinea is among eight Pacific Island countries to meet China’s President Xi Jinping.
A senior Chinese foreign ministry official told reporters that the leaders of Fiji, the Federated States of Micronesia, Samoa, PNG, Vanuatu, the Cook Islands, Tonga and Niue would attend. Assistant Foreign Minister Zheng Zeguang said the visit would be a first for China. He said while Taiwan’s friends in the region had not been invited, “this does not mean that China ignores them”. Kiribati, the Marshall Islands, Nauru, Palau, the Solomon Islands and Tuvalu have diplomatic links with Taiwan. Xi is expected to offer a broad aid package and speak on China’s policy towards Pacific island countries. The 64-year-old, who was elected into office early last year, will hold bilateral one-on-one meetings with the country leaders. A series of documents and deals will be signed during the visit, covering areas such as finance, education, training and infrastructure construction.
