By Allan Bird It was an eye opener for us to visit the Scenic Rim Council just outside of Brisbane this week. This Council of 40,000 people generates more than K4b to support the Australian economy. In comparison, East Sepik has 600,000 people and only contributes around K700m to the PNG economy. The Mayor, Councilor Greg Christensen and his team have done an amazing job. From the Queensland State Government all the way down, it was incredible to hear them all talk about two things: Economy and Jobs. I have been in Parliament for 2 years 7 months and I have hardly heard anyone talk about economy and jobs except for the Treasurer. All we talk about is Service Delivery. I have been hearing about Service Delivery since I was a teenager and that is still the conversation in our Parliament today. It is time we changed the conversation among the PNG Bureaucracy and more particularly our leaders so that we focus on growing our economy so that our people can have income opportunities. When you hear a local council in Australia focus on jobs and economy while we are still fiddling around with service delivery in Parliament: we know we have lots of work to do. I have been trying my best to shift our focus in Sepik to jobs and economic opportunities and I hope our public servants can adapt quickly. We have a brilliant opportunity with the EU STREIT program but we need to do more. Along with Governors Juffa and Agarobe, Hon Sungi and Kapavore we are very grateful to the Australian government and her people for this very valuable insight into Decentralized Government practices in Australia. More particularly, to see what the main drivers of Australian policy from top to bottom is invaluable. Next : Advantages And Disadvantage Of Foreign Economic Aid Comments are closed.
