A signing of agreements for the construction of a casino took place between the National Gaming Control Board and Paga Hill Development today at the Stanley Hotel, Port Moresby. The partnership will also include the development of lottery and online betting to be considered in the lists of gaming industry. The first stage of this project will cost K150 million which was described as a massive investment, with construction to start later in September or October. Chairman of NGCB Clemence Kanau says that they will also look at legalizing online betting and others in the PNG Gaming Industry. Mr. Kanau says the casino is not new, and that it is an international gambling of chance which is happening globally. He says, under his leadership and his board, there will be exciting developments in the industry, with casino being the first, and next in line is lottery. NGCB, as the regulator of the gaming board, will get into the business of participating in the gaming industry, and with the support from the government, will continue to improve it, for more job creation.
Meanwhile, Paga Hill Estate CEO Gudmundur (Gummi) Fridriksson says that PNG also needs to diversify its economy and one of such is tourism. He says that every year, 300 cruise ships carrying tourists sailed past PNG, and in order to attract some of these ships to PNG shores, the country needs to have the right products. Mr. Fridriksson says that an estimated 80 of these 300 ships visiting the country in the first 18 months when the casino operation starts will bring 250 million US dollars back into the country’s economy and over 200 thousand new tourists.
