Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape has commended Lands and Physical Planning Minister John Rosso on passage of the Strata Title Management Bill 2022 and accompanying bills and amendments in Parliament today (March 23 2022). The bill allows for people to buy units and apartments in high-rise buildings because of increasing shortage of land and a growing population. PM Marape said the law was brought in to modernise the way business was done in lands and housing in the country. The Prime Minister said smaller Pacific countries like Fiji and Vanuatu already had strata title laws PORT MORESBY: The National Capital District Commission (NCDC) will by the end of this month launch an alternative public transport service to address the growing demand and call for a reliable, efficient and secure public transport system for the City. This follows a number of years of planning by NCDC and negotiations with the National Department of Transport and the Road Transport Authority which have the power and authority over public transport in the City. An agreement was reached at the end of 2021 with the National Road Authority (RTA) finally authorizing NCDC to operate an alternative service initially on eight ( routes. In welcoming the decision of the RTA, NCD Governor Hon. Powes Parkop-who has been pushing for the decentralization of these powers for a while, assured the people of the City that the new service will seek to promote and deliver a public transport that is reliable, safe, efficient and affordable. Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape has told parliament that consumers of goods and services will see a 2% slash on the Goods and Services Tax or GST in the country. He told Parliament during Question Time this morning, in light of increasing inflation currently affecting consumers. Transparency International PNG (TIPNG) has described Parliament's decision to create seven new electorates on the eve of the national election, as an irresponsible act. TIPNG Board Chairman, Peter Aitsi, in a statement, says that decision will adversely impact both the governance and the administration of the election. Mr. Aitsi says the decision to create new electorates, in the absence of reliable census data, gazettal notices, proper broad public consultation as required by the law, and no consideration for the administrative implications in the coming elections, is highly irresponsible. Vitis Industries Limited has been slapped with a fine of close to K2.6 million by Customs, over tax evasion practices in its Port Moresby premises. Customs announced on Tuesday, 22/3/22, it has uncovered this major non-compliance exercise two weeks ago. The authority has given 14-days for Vitis since last Friday to pay up or face further consequences of their licences being revoked. Customs Commissioner David Towe says, the company has breached the Excise Act 1956 by not properly, keeping records of certain products, declaring them and paying appropriate taxes. WORKS DEPT. REVEALS A K45 BILLION BACKLOG OF PAYMENT TO BE MADE TO CONTRACTORS The Department of Works and Highway have a K45 Billion bill to pay up to contractors.
