Nomination for the country's 2022 National General Election will close at 4 o'clock this afternoon, (Thursday, 26th of May, 2022).
So far, a total of 1,295 candidates have filed their nominations to contest the 2022 National Election, as of 10 AM Wednesday morning. Papua New Guinea Electoral Commissioner Simon Sinai in a statement, says from this figure, a total of 71 women have been nominated, while the other 1,224 are men. A senior judge has appealed to the people of Eastern Highlands Province to use their votes wisely. Justice Panuel Mogish made the call yesterday, when officially opening the first-ever Supreme Court sitting in Goroka. Justice Mogish said there is no need to fight or even load supporters on vehicles and on campaigns. Governor-General Grand Chief Sir Bob Dadae, will travel to the United Kingdom this week to attend the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebration in June. A statement from Government House says the Governor-General has been invited to participate in celebrations marking the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee anniversary of 70 years since accession to the British throne in 1952, and as head of the Commonwealth of nations. Papua New Guinea Opposition leader and Member for Vanimo Green River, Belden Namah, has put his hand up for the Prime Minister's post. In a statement, Mr. Namah announced this as he leads 85 candidates into the election, under the PNG Party banner. He admitted it won't be an easy task because he will have to be invited, as the head of the biggest number of elected MPs after the return of writs, to form government. Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape has congratulated incoming Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and thanked outgoing prime minister Scott Morrison for his continued support to PNG over the last three years.
He said this on Sunday after Mr. Albanese led his labour party to victory in the national election in Australia. Mr. Marape in his congratulatory message said Australia and PNG have always been close and he looks forward to strengthening this relationship. Australia has always been PNG's biggest and strongest supporter in as far as bilateral relations between the two countries. Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape has announced that Member for Lae Open, John Rosso will be his Deputy. He says it is rightful that the Deputy is from the Morobe province, after the passing of the late Deputy Prime Minister, Sam Basil. Police in Port Moresby have arrested a supporter of a political candidate for having in his possession a home made gun and two live bullets in Port Moresby yesterday. The arrest and recoveries were made after Sector Patrol Fox 300 Alpha spotted a man brandishing a weapon in one of several vehicles moving in a convoy at Boroko. THE United Labour Party (ULP) is fielding Sam Basil Jnr to defend Bulolo for the party in the general election, ULP deputy leader Koni Iguan says. “This is to honour and respect the Deputy Prime Minister late Sam Basil,” he announced at Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium in Lae on Wednesday night. Among a packed crowd at the stadium, where Basil’s casket lay in state, were Prime Minister James Marape, Lae MP John Rosso, Morobe Governor Ginson Saonu, Yangoru-Saussia MP Richard Maru. Iguan said it was the wish of the people of Wau and Bulolo that one of his (Basil’s) son must contest in honour of him. Two siblings, children of the late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare are among the candidates that have nominated so far in the East Sepik Province. Dulciana Somare-Brash will contest the Angoram Open while his elder brother Michael Maiwi Somare, known as Junior Muts to locals, will contest the Regional seat. Prominent public figures are among good number of candidates vying for the Port Moresby North West for this year's general election. Sitting Member for Moresby North-West Lohia Boe Samuel said he's ready to defend his seat. He won the seat through a by-election last year under the PANGU Pati banner. Mr. Samuel nominated at Ipi Park at Hohola yesterday (Thursday 19.05.22). Speaking after his nomination, Mr. Samuel said he's pleased to nominate quietly. |
